Spanish Copper "Pirate" Money. Philip IV of Spain, 1621–1665 AD. 8-Maravedis Coin Revalued in 1641. Originally struck with a lion on one side and a castle on the other, this copper 8-maravedis was counterstamped during a monetary revaluation in 1641—now bearing a large “1641” on one side and Roman numeral “VIII” on the other. Deep coppery tone with sharp detail. Encapsulated and graded Fine Details by NGC. Coin measures 21mm in diameter; archival slab measures 3.125" x 2.125" x 0.375”. Provenance: Ex De Père, WI collection. *** These rugged coins circulated widely in Spain’s colonies and aboard ships during the age of pirates and privateers, making them a true piece of maritime and colonial history.
