Spanish Copper "Pirate" Money. Philippe III of Spain, 1598–1626 AD. 8-Maravedis Coin dated 1602, Segovia Mint. The obverse features a crowned lion within a shield; inscription HISPANIARVM REX with date “1602” to the right / The reverse shows a crowned castle within a shield; inscription PHILIPPVS III D G. Coin reference: Calico 758 for type. Graded VF with a rich coppery tone and sharp detail. The coin is set into a custom .925 silver bezel adorned with three genuine garnets. Total bezel diameter 35mm (1 3/8"). Provenance: Ex Cordoba, Spain collection. *** Coins like this were widely circulated in Spain’s New World colonies and often associated with treasure hoards and maritime trade—making them a favorite among collectors of “pirate-era” currency.
