Ancient Rome. Constantine I the Great, 307–337 AD. Bronze Nummus struck 324 AD. The front depicts Constantine facing right, rosette-diademed, draped, and cuirassed; inscription CONSTANTINVS MAX AVG around / The back depicts two Roman soldiers holding spears and shields with two standards between them; inscription GLORIA EXERCITVS, mintmark SMANA for the Antioch mint. Deep coppery to black patina with strong detail. Coin reference: RIC VII 86 for type. Coin measures 18mm in diameter; encapsulated and graded Very Fine by NGC. Archival slab size: 3.125" x 2.125" x 0.375”. Provenance: Ex De Père, WI collection. *** Struck during Constantine’s reign, this issue commemorates the strength and loyalty of the Roman army. Coins like this served as propaganda to reinforce his legitimacy and military authority throughout the empire.
