Struck circa June 1280–December 1281 AD, this “New Coinage” issue features a crowned facing bust of Edward I; inscription EDWRD ANGL DNS HYB around / The reverse shows a long cross pattée with triple pellets in each quarter; inscription CIVITAS LONDON around. Coin reference: SCBI 39 (North), 95–7; North 1018; SCBC 1389 for type. Measures 19mm, weighs 1.42g. Light marks, graded Good VF. Provenance: From the 2015 Haddiscoe Hoard (PAS NMS C8AA6F); Ex Classical Numismatic Group (CNG). *** Edward’s reformed coinage brought consistency and trust to English money during a period of military expansion and administrative centralization.
