First Jewish War. The Jewish Revolt Against Rome, 66–70 C.E. Bronze Prutah dated Year 2 (67/68 C.E.). The front shows a two-handled amphora with ancient Hebrew inscription “Year Two” around / The back features a grape leaf on a small vine, with the Hebrew inscription “The Freedom of Zion” around. Coin reference: Meshorer 196; Hendin 1360 for type. Dark olive-green patina with Holy Land earthen highlights. Coin measures 17mm in diameter; encapsulated and graded Fine by NGC. Archival slab measures 3.125" x 2.125" x 0.375”. Provenance: Ex De Père, WI collection. *** Minted during the Jewish Revolt, this coin circulated at the time of Josephus and the Siege of Masada. Similar coins have been excavated at the mountaintop fortress and are often called “Masada coins.”
