Treasure from the Wreck of the Concepción, Sunk in 1641. Large Silver 8-Reale Cob “Piece of Eight,” Mexico City Mint, c. 1640. Struck in colonial Mexico, this impressive silver cob features a bold cross with castles and lions on one side / The other side displays the Spanish royal coat of arms within a shield. Well-preserved with minimal corrosion, dark gray toning, and strong detail on both shield and cross. Measures 33mm, weighs 24.38g. Concepción excavation registration no. 37652. *** Recovered from the wreck of the Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, which sank on the Silver Shoals reef in 1641, this piece of eight is a true artifact of Spanish maritime history and the golden age of transatlantic treasure fleets.
