REX around / The reverse depicts Britannia seated on a rock, holding a trident and olive branch, shield at her side, ship in the background; inscription BRITANNIA 1797 below. Minted at Birmingham, England. Measures a massive 41mm in diameter and 5mm thick, weighing 56.12g. Coppery-brown tone with dings and dents from heavy circulation. Provenance: Ex De Père, WI collection. *** Issued during the reign of the real-life King George from the Revolutionary War and Broadway’s Hamilton, this oversized coin was designed to discourage counterfeiting—and still makes an impression over 200 years later.
