Classical Greece. Athens, Attica, c. 454–404 BC. Silver Tetradrachm. The front features the helmeted head of Athena facing right / The back shows a classical owl standing right with head facing, tail feathers closed; olive sprig and crescent to the left, ΑΘΕ (“ATHENS”) to the right—all within an incuse square. Coin reference: Kroll 8; HGC 4, 1597 for type. Measures 23mm, weighs 16.91g. Grades Fine, with ancient bankers’ countermarks and test cuts. Provenance: Ex Classical Numismatic Group (CNG). *** Struck during Athens’ golden age, these coins financed construction of the Acropolis and the Parthenon, and later helped fund the Peloponnesian War against Sparta.
