Ancient Rome. Emperor Gratian, 367–383 AD. Bronze Nummus struck c. 367–375 AD. The front depicts Gratian’s pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust facing right; inscription: DN GRATIA-NVS PF AVG around / The back reads VOT X MVLT XX in four lines within a wreath; mintmark TES below for Thessalonica. Coin reference: RIC IX 13a var. for type. Deep olive-green patina with light earthen deposits and excellent detail. Coin measures 15mm in diameter; encapsulated and certified by NGC. Archival slab size: 3.125" x 2.125" x 0.375”. Provenance: Ex De Père, WI collection. *** This votive issue symbolized loyalty and stability: “I vowed to serve for 10 years, now grant me 20”—a clever piece of imperial propaganda.
