Ancient Celtic Gaul. Mid 1st Century BC. Silver Quinarius struck by the Sequani tribe near Besançon. The front depicts a helmeted Celtic head facing left; inscription Q.DOCI to the left / The back shows a horse racing left with legend SAM.F around. Coin reference: Delestrée 3245 for type. Excellent detail for this scarce tribal issue. Coin measures 13mm in diameter; encapsulated and graded Very Fine by NGC. Archival slab size: 3.125" x 2.125" x 0.375”. Provenance: Ex De Père, WI collection. *** Issued during the turbulent years of Roman expansion into Gaul, these coins reflect the distinct cultural and artistic identity of the Celtic tribes, and are rarely preserved with this level of detail.
