Product Description

Ancient Celtic “Barbarous” Imitative Coin. Pannonian Celts, Danube Region, c. late 3rd Century AD. A fascinating imitation of a Roman coin, likely modeled after an issue of Emperor Tacitus (275–276 AD). The front depicts a radiate-crowned bust of a ruler facing right / The back shows a standing goddess with a garbled inscription around. Black patina with reddish earthen deposits. Encapsulated and certified by NGC. Coin measures 14mm in diameter; archival slab measures 3.125" x 2.125" x 0.375”. Provenance: Ex De Père, WI collection. *** Struck by the Pannonian Celts along the Danube, these so-called “barbarous” issues reflect how Roman influence extended far beyond the empire’s official borders—blending native craftsmanship with imperial iconography.
