Teotihuacan Miniature Candelero // 200-600 AD
Product Description
Pre-Columbian, Teotihuacan, ancient Mexico, c. 200 - 600 AD. A lovely miniature pottery double-chambered vessel known as a candelero with incised decoration. Similar jars have been heavily studied and they seem to have been personal braziers used for burning ritual incense made from copal, often found in the context of burials. Size: 2.375”L x 1.25"W x 1.75"H. Beautifully preserved, with surface nicks and abrasions, otherwise intact with light mineral deposits on the interior. See: Berrin ‘Teotihuacan’ page 239 for a similar piece in the Smithsonian museum. Provenance: ex private Massachusetts collection of Kahlil and Jean Gibran. Kahlil Gibran (1922-2008) was a successful mid-20th century Magic Realist painter and sculptor. Accompanied by a hand-signed certificate of authenticity which includes all the details, culture, dating, motifs/inscriptions when applicable, historical relevance, and provenance.
