French Police Cabriolet Handcuffs // Circa Late 1800's
Product Description
A fascinating set of French Police handcuffs dating from the late 1800’s. Known as “cabriolet,” they integrate wood ends and 9 links of very strong twisted wire sections, and were issued to the French police from 1800-early 1900’s. These were wrapped around the wrists of the arrestee and the ends were twisted, leaving the wooden parts free for the arresting officer to hold. This style carried several advantages: Very low weight and bulk, and were very simple to handle. All you had to do was pass the chain around the wrist and squeeze the wooden handles by crossing them. Total length 10.875”L; wood handles measure 3.75”L. Ex-Arizona private collection. Accompanied by a hand-signed certificate of authenticity which includes all the details, culture, dating, motifs/inscriptions when applicable, historical relevance, and provenance.
