Egyptian Alabaster Kohl Jar // 1985-1773 BC

Ancient Egypt. Middle Kingdom, c. 1985-1773 BC. A large alabaster kohl jar. The body piriform in shape, with flattened foot, short neck and wide, flat rim; the interior well-bored with thick walls and dark ancient kohl deposits inside from ancient use. Kohl was an important cosmetic to the ancient Egyptians, and was used as a type of eye-liner which repelled insects and reduced glare from the blazing desert sun. It was applied with a small bronze, stone, or wood applicator and used sparingly as it was a valuable material of the time. H: 2.625”, W: 2.5”, ancient chipping and losses to the rim and foot.
