A lovely ancient Byzantine lead cross pendant, c. 9th-12th Century AD. The surface is decorated with a raised pellet design, and an all-blu-illegible inscription in Greek across the horizontal bar, which is easier to see in-hand. The small suspension loop was somewhat crushed and fused in ancient times. Measures 1.5”L, with a nice deep olive green patina. ** Because it is lead, which is a toxic metal, this cross is for display only, and should not be worn against the skin. Ex European private collection, acquired on the German art market in the late 1990s; Ex Numisart, Vienna, Austria. Accompanied by a hand-signed certificate of authenticity which includes all the details, culture, dating, motifs/inscriptions when applicable, historical relevance, and provenance.
